Carol Alt: The Raw Revolution

“Now here comes the biggie,” Alt continues. “pH.” A chemical term for measuring the amounts of acid or alkali, the pH balance in our bodies has a direct effect on our health. “The body is either acidic or alkaline,” says Alt, “but the point is that we’ve got to keep a perfect balance of both.” How?
How Detroit's Water Crisis is Part Of A Much Bigger Problem

In Detroit, thousands of people have had their water turned off in the last few months after not paying their bills. For the water department, it's a way to get delinquent customers to settle their tabs. For residents and activists, it's a serious issue when the city's poorest, including children, are made to live without running water in their home. A group of United Nations experts called it a violation of human rights.
What You Need To Know Before You Reuse That Plastic Water Bottle

In an article in a 2007 issue of the journal Practical Gastroenterology, experts pointed out that commercial bottled water manufacturers don't recommend that consumers reuse their disposable bottles. That's because "everyday wear and tear from repeated washings and reuse can lead to physical breakdown of the plastic, such as visible thinning or cracks. Bacteria can harbor in the cracks, posing a health risk," they wrote.
Watch Bill Gates Drink Water That Was Once Human Poop

According to the World Health Organization, 1.8 billion people use a source of drinking-water that is contaminated with fecal matter. An estimated 1 billion people still defecate in the open, an issue that leads to water contamination and other debilitating issues, including diarrheal disease -- which is the second leading cause of death of children under 5. Areas with latrines but no modern sewage systems are also at high risk. There, truckers dump human waste in the nearest river, ocean or at a treatment facility that doesn’t treat the sewage, Gates wrote. The contaminated feces then ends up in the water supply.
Water Pollution Facts, Effects of Water Pollution, Clean Water Act

Clean and plentiful water provides the foundation for prosperous communities. We rely on clean water to survive, yet right now we are heading towards a water crisis. Changing climate patterns are threatening lakes and rivers, and key sources that we tap for drinking water are being overdrawn or tainted with pollution.
Department of Environmental Conservation Report on Unisys. Site No. 130045
Chemicals have polluted the groundwater of a site in Lake Success, Nassau County, Long Island. The Department of Environmental Conservation has just released a report regarding the clean up of this site. Though an On-Site Remedial Program is in the making, the DEC will not be resorting the site back to it's original conditions. Concerns about the toxic underground water have been raised by residents of the area, as well as concerns about exposure levels on the soccer field that lies above the site.

Traces of Montana Oil Spill Are Found In Drinking Water

Work crews burrowed through thick ice and set up containment booms Tuesday in a struggle to vacuum up 50,000 gallons of oil that spilled into the Yellowstone River from a ruptured pipeline, contaminating drinking water.
The 12-inch steel pipeline, which burst Saturday morning near Glendive, Mont., about 400 miles east of here, sent light crude oil flowing downstream as far as the confluence with the Missouri River, 60 miles away in North Dakota.
10 Essential Facts That You Want To Know About Alkaline Water
Alkaline Water has a pH level greater than seven. It balances the body pH of an acidic person. It makes water rich in an antioxidant, which is a natural remedy that can slow aging, improve weight loss, and prevent diseases by increasing the alkaline level of the body and neutralizing acid. For these reasons, alkaline water is much smoother and tastier than conventional water.

Drugs in Drinking Water-What you can do
Over 80% of municipal water supplies in the US are contaminated by small amounts of pharmaceutical and over the counter drugs. Research shows that these drugs are having an effect on fish and other aquatic life, but their effects on humans have not been studied. Making matters worse is the one thing we do know: Chlorine in tap water makes many of these drugs even more toxic.
|
In fact, one of the most common drugs in drinking water, acetaminophen, forms two toxic compounds when mixed with chlorine in drinking water. Thankfully, you don’t have to wait for studies to show harmful effects to do something about the drugs that may be in your water. There are home water filtration systems that can reduce and even eliminate many drugs in water, and the chlorine that makes them more toxic.
The Chemical In 'BPA-Free' Water Bottles May Be Just As Unhealthy As BPA
Many of us have read the studies about bisphenol-A, and know the chemical is best avoided when it comes to drinking containers, baby bottles, canned foods and thermal paper. The chemical, also known as BPA, has been linked to everything from obesity and diabetes to attention-deficit disorder and asthma. When a slew of new products branded "BPA-free" hit the market amid public outcry a few years back, many thought the problem solved.
|
But a damning new study from scientists at the University of Calgary has found that the supposed remedy -- a chemical similar to BPA called bisphenol-S -- may be just as bad for your health. The researchers, including corresponding author Dr. Deborah M. Kurrasch, end the paper urging for "a societal push to remove all bisphenols from our consumer goods."
Detroit residents fight back over water shutoff: 'It's a life-or-death situation'

When the coast is clear, and the trucks from the contractor shutting off water for the city of Detroit have rolled away, the men with water keys come.
They offer residents whose supply has just been shut off a tempting deal. For $20, they will use their tools to turn the water main back on immediately, and illegally, sparing the household the agonising days spent without showering, cooking or flushing that have already been endured by at least 16,000 of their neighbours so far this year.

Tap Water Ban for Toledo Residents

Residents of Toledo, Ohio’s fourth-largest city, spent the weekend under a water advisory after tests revealed toxins in the city’s water supply, likely caused by algae growing in Lake Erie.
Tens of thousands of people kept faucets turned off and left their homes in search of clean water. They waited in lines at fire stations for bottled water, crossed state lines in search of stores with supplies after local outlets ran dry, and drove to friends’ homes miles away to fill containers.

How Corporations Are Creating a Life-Threatening Water Shortage

Imagine the swift and fierce government response if Al-Qaeda took a precious resource out of a delicate environment, sold it for profit and endangered 40 million people in the process. Now compare that example to the nonexistent government response to American energy companies, golf courses and corporations like Nestlé taking 75 percent of the groundwater out of the Colorado River Basin at a time when the American West is facing a record drought.
Corporations will continue to abuse their constitutional protections as legal “persons” until fresh water has become fully privatized, or until corporate constitutional rights are eliminated with a constitutional amendment

Toilet to tap" wastewater recycling begins in Texas city

As much of Texas grapples with lingering drought, a second city in the Lone Star State has begun reusing treated wastewater in a state-approved recycling process to bolster drinking supplies.
Wichita Falls, near the Oklahoma border, on Wednesday began reusing millions of gallons of water at the River Road Waste Treatment plant that's been purified to meet government drinking standards. The water is then sent by a 12-mile pipeline to the Cypress Water Treatment Plant for additional purification.

Diabetes Toll Worsens

In 2012, 29.1 million Americans had diabetes and 86 million adults had prediabetes, according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
In 2010, these statistics were 25.8 and 79 million, respectively. Diabetes patients are at an increased risk for heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney disease, and amputations, among other complications. The estimated annual cost of diabetes is $245 billion.

Heinz hides GMO corn in 'all natural' vinegar, lawsuit alleges

The "all natural" label on food products is sort of like a gated community; it provides a false sense of security.
USDA Certified Organic is the only seal completely regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The "all natural" term is only regulated on meat and poultry products. Aside from that, any company can use this label without it really meaning anything, as it has no standard definition.

Pretty Much All Plastic Sucks: ‘BPA-Free’ Alternatives Just as Risky, Study Finds

Beyond BPA (bisphenol-A), synthetic estrogens are rampant in our food supply and household products—even those marketed as BPA-free—and they present considerable health concerns, warns recent research.
While the FDA continues to maintain its position that BPA, particularly in low doses, poses no real health threat to Americans, research says otherwise, and other chemical estrogens given less attention than BPA are proving to be just as risky, particularly for young children.

Pathogens in Your Mouth Can Lead to Cancer in Other Parts of Your Body

Good oral hygiene is even more important than previously thought. Pathogenic microorganisms and their toxins can harm more than just your mouth when they circulate through your bloodstream—they can potentially cause secondary infections and chronic inflammation throughout your body.
The fact that oral pathogens can make their way to distant parts of your anatomy and cause serious problems has been known for many years.

Harvard Research Finds Link Between Fluoridated Water, ADHD & Mental Disorders

New research published in The Lancet by researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS) found that various chemicals that many children are exposed to are having a direct effect on the creation of disorders labelled under the name ADHD as well as other mental disorders. One of the chemicals said to be having an effect is fluoride, or variations of fluoride. Governments have been performing artificial fluoridation for a number of years regardless of the lack of effectiveness it has in preventing tooth decay.
Toxic heavy metals in lipsticks threaten health of women and unborn babies

It may seem like another pattern to break or drop while pregnant: first, smoking; then, wine sipping; and now - cosmetics? According to the evidence from independent researchers and lab analysts, the price of enhancing beauty with most commercial cosmetics goes beyond dollars and cents. The cosmetic pay-later plan involves risking one's health and the health of one's unborn baby.
Hot Pockets recalled, may contain “diseased and unsound animals”

Nestlé is recalling certain varieties of Hot Pockets after learning they’ve potentially been stuffed with “diseased and unsound animals.”
The company is voluntarily pulling the product from the shelves as part of a massive USDA recall of 8.7 million pounds of meat processed by Rancho Feeding Corp. The meat in question, per the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service, is “unsound, unwholesome or otherwise are unfit for human food and must be removed from commerce.” According to Nestlé, a “small quantity” of that meat may have made its way into the Hot Pockets produced at its California facility.

Chevron Natural Gas Well Explodes in Pennsylvania, Vote for Edible Long Island’s Local Heroes 2014, California Lawmakers Propose Warning Labels For Sodas

Last week, an explosion at a fracking site in southwestern Pennsylvania, left one worker injured and another missing and presumed dead.
A fire at the site continued to burn into the afternoon after the blast, which occurred around 6:45 a.m. Chevron did not immediately know the cause of the blast. Less than a week after the incident, Chevron has come under fire after sending out an apology letter to local residents…with a voucher for a large pizza and two-liter drink. What can we learn from this? 1. Fracking is an highly dangerous practice that contributes to air and water pollution, devaluation of land, and puts communities and workers at risk. 2. Despite making billions of dollars, the companies that profit from fracking consider minimal compensation for major environmental and human catastrophes sufficient
Strontium, PFOA and toxic chemicals found in one-third of U.S. water supply

You may want to think twice before further drinking or even bathing in unfiltered tap water, as a new report set to be published next year has found that a striking percentage of the U.S. water supply is contaminated with heavy metals, pesticides and other toxic chemicals. Researchers from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) found that an astounding one-third of U.S. water systems contain traces of at least 18 unregulated and potentially hazardous contaminants, many of which are linked to causing endocrine disruption and cancer.
Based on a nationwide survey of 25 unnamed water utilities, scientists found traces of the herbicide metolachlor, for instance, a pesticide commonly applied to conventional corn, soy, cotton, safflower, potato and other crops, as well as the heavy metal strontium, which is linked to causing bone problems. Other chemicals identified include so-called perfluorinated compounds like perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), which numerous scientific studies have found can cause thyroid disease and various types of cancer.

Obama Care to exclude top hospitals

Americans who are buying insurance plans over online exchanges, under what is known as Obamacare, will have limited access to some of the nation’s leading hospitals, including two world-renowned cancer centres.
Amid a drive by insurers to limit costs, the majority of insurance plans being sold on the new healthcare exchanges in New York, Texas, and California, for example, will not offer patients’ access to Memorial Sloan Kettering in Manhattan or MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, two top cancer centres, or Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles, one of the top research and teaching hospitals in the country.

We Are Heading For The Greatest Doctor Shortage In American History

The United States already has an emerging shortage of doctors, and thanks to Obamacare that shortage is about to become much, much worse. Right now, the U.S. has close to a million doctors, and about half of them are over the age of 50. Many of them are beginning to wonder if practicing medicine is worth it anymore. In some specialties, treating Medicaid and Medicare patients pays so little that many doctors are now turning them away. Other doctors are charging their regular patients enormous amounts in order to make up for the money that they are losing on Medicaid and Medicare patients. And of course the paperwork and the red tape imposed on doctors by the health insurance companies and the federal government gets worse with each passing year.
WHO: Cancer risk rising around the world; Western medicine failing globally

The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued dire new predictions about the spread of cancer throughout the world that prove the Western model of medicine to be a complete failure. Within the next 10 years, the public health arm of the United Nations claims, cancer rates will increase by more than 25 percent, with most of this growth expected to occur in developing countries that have been heavily infiltrated by Western influences.
Is this one daily habit increasing your risk of cancer?

Bearing in mind that skin is the body's largest organ and absorbs substances readily, it's always a good rule of thumb to avoid exposing skin to anything we wouldn't ingest. And yet, a common routine is poisoning us on a daily basis - specifically, chlorinated showers and baths. Used in water treatment facilities to destroy harmful bacteria, viruses and fungi, chlorine is a potent disinfectant. But the darker side of water chlorination is rarely acknowledged, namely, that it causes serious harm to humans in ways which often remain unnoticed until major illness strikes.

Spike in Water Lead Levels Coincided with Rise in Miscarriages
Eco Watch, December 10, 2013
Pregnant women in Washington, D.C. experienced an unusually high number of late-term miscarriages during the same time period that lead levels were dangerously high in the city's drinking water and the public was unaware of the problem, a study has found.
Authors of the study, scheduled to be published in the journal Environmental Science and Technology, say the findings do not prove the city's lead crisis caused fetal deaths or miscarriages, but the results show a significant correlation.
